Even if you walk or hike with your pooch multiple times a day, nothing beats a fenced-in backyard that allows them to romp and play footloose and leash-free. Not only will this allow your dog time outdoors alone to root around and play in the dirt, it also provides you a whole playground for just you and your pup.
The entertainment potential greatly increases when your playground isn’t limited to the inside of your home where a game of fetch could mean disaster for your favorite lamp. Along with more uninhibited games of fetch, you can also set up obstacle courses, play tag and include your dog in your outdoor activities like grilling and yard work.
Provide a Climate-Appropriate Dog House
Even if your pup isn’t going to be spending a significant amount of time in the backyard, including a dog house is a great way to make a house a home for the dog. They’ll understand that the dog house is a space just for them, since it’s unlikely that you’ll be crawling in there with them. And we all need a place that feels like it’s just for us.
When looking at dog houses, consider the weather and climate of your region. If you have to endure sweltering summers, make sure your dog house has plenty of ventilation so it doesn’t become too stifling. If you live in a colder region, go for a cushier dog house with lots of insulation to keep your pup cozy.
Maintain Those Thickets
Most dogs like a few bushes and a bit of underbrush to rummage through every now and then, but that doesn’t mean that you should let your backyard run wild. Clear out and maintain those thickets regularly to ensure that nothing (or no one) is inhabiting the area that isn’t welcome. Certain critters and parasites are drawn to overgrown areas, and creatures like these can cause serious harm to your pup.
Making a house a home for the dog means making their home safe and secure too. So while you can feel free to let your backyard ideas run wild, it isn’t such a good idea to let your actual backyard run wild. In addition to making it safer for your dog, less underbrush also means they’re less likely to come inside with a myriad of plant life attached to their freshly-bathed coat.
