Pet Travel Regulations in New Orleans, Louisiana
When bringing a cat or dog into New Orleans from outside the city:
- Vaccinations: If the pet is vaccinated according to the laws of the place it’s coming from, you can keep it in the city for up to 30 days without a rabies license from a Louisiana veterinarian. Dogs need to be vaccinated for rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and bordetella. Cats need vaccinations for rabies, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia.
- Health certificate: Pets coming into Orleans Parish from outside Louisiana must have a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian, issued no more than 30 days before arriving in Louisiana. This certificate must confirm that the animal is free from contagious diseases and be filed with the local agency within ten days of arrival.
- Fines: Not following these rules can result in a fine of at least $100.00 per animal.

Pet Laws in New Orleans, Louisiana
In New Orleans, Louisiana, pet owners should be familiar with various pet laws and regulations for the safety and well-being of their pets and the community:
- Pet owners would only need to vaccinate their animals every three years, though vaccination licenses must still be obtained annually.
- Privately owned cats that live inside or outside must now be microchipped or ear-tipped.
- Muzzles are prohibited on dogs unless an owner is present or the animal is under a veterinarian’s care.
- Dogs can only be tethered if they are neutered. On a tether a dog must be free to move at least 30 feet on a lead that is attached to an overhead trolley system.
- Dogs cannot be tethered unsupervised between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- Louisiana prohibits “at-large” animals – for example any dog that is not on the owner’s property or on a leash less than six feet.
