Pet Travel (Dogs & Cats) Regulations in Miami, Florida
The CDC has chosen to prolong the temporary halt, first implemented in July 2021, for dogs coming into the United States from nations posing a heightened risk of dog rabies. This extension will remain in force until July 31, 2024, with the persistence of all current requirements and prerequisites.
In Florida, dogs and cats 4 months and older are mandated to possess an up-to-date rabies vaccination approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Dogs and cats must have an Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health certificate) within 30 days of issuance, unless the pet is privately owned and traveling with its owner or meets an exception listed in Rule 5C-3.009, Florida Administrative Code, and documentation of current rabies vaccine, if the pet is three months of age or older.
Pet Laws in Miami, Florida
- According to Florida law, as a dog owner, you bear responsibility for any harm your dog causes to another person.
- Subjecting your dog to excessive heat in a confined space without proper ventilation (like a car) typically falls within the realm of the state’s animal cruelty law.
- Unattended tethering (or chaining) of your dog is prohibited.
- For the prevention of rabies, dogs, cats, and ferrets must receive vaccinations starting at 4 months of age, with subsequent revaccination as directed by the vaccine manufacturer, usually every 1 or 3 years. Dogs are required to be licensed annually, and their tags must be worn at all times.
- Residential property regulations dictate that up to 4 dogs are allowed on properties less than one acre, 6 dogs on 1 to 2 acres, and 8 dogs on 2 acres or more. Maintaining more than these specified numbers necessitates obtaining a Kennel license.
- Dogs are not permitted to roam freely off private property and must be leashed at all times.
